While there are countless poker variations, they all share a few core elements. The aim of poker is to use your two personal cards and the five community cards on the table to create a good poker hand. This can be achieved by either calling the bets of players with superior hands or by bluffing. A good bluff can win the pot by fooling players into believing you have a better hand than you do.
During each betting round, the order of play moves around the table. This is called position and it allows players to know more about the strength of other players’ hands. When it’s your turn to act, you can say “call” if you wish to match a previous bet or “raise” to increase the amount of money you put in.
During the final betting round, the remaining players reveal their cards to determine the winner(s) of that round. Depending on the type of poker you play, you may also be able to draw replacement cards for your existing ones during or after the betting round. Players can also choose to muck their cards, which means to toss them in the burn pile without showing anyone.
